Assateague tribe

The Assateagues or Assateague Indian Tribe are an Algonquian tribe speaking the Nanticoke language who historically lived on the Atlantic coast side of the Delmarva Peninsula (known during the colonial period as the Eastern Shores of Maryland and Virginia, and the Lower Counties of Pennsylvania). The aboriginal Assateague chiefdom was adapted to the maritime and forest resources of the Chincoteague Bay watershed and involved in the manufacture and trade of shell beads.〔(Indians in Maryland, an Overview ), Maryland Online Encyclopedia〕
==Rituals==

As with most other Indian tribes who lived on the Delmarva Peninsula, little is known of their daily life. However, the Assateague, like some other neighboring tribes, practiced excarnation as part of their burial custom. They removed the skin from the body after death and scraped the bones free of flesh. The remains were then placed on shelves in a log structure. Periodically, the remains were collected and buried in a common grave or ossuary. Several ossuaries have been discovered on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.〔( Historical marker ) in Assateague Island National Seashore
